Visit the David J. Sencer CDC Museum on Smithsonian Museum Day 2015
For Atlanta natives and guests alike, the David J. Sencer CDC Museum is a hidden gem to discover at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) headquarters. Museum visitors can explore award-winning exhibits about the value of global health, learn more about the rich history of CDC and gain greater understanding of the work CDC does to save lives and protect Americans. The museum hosts about 90,000 visitors each year, and provides popular educational programs for students and teachers.
As a Smithsonian Affiliate, the museum will be participating in Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day Live on Saturday, September 26th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This is the only day out of the year that the museum is open on a Saturday.
A new photography exhibit co-organized by the CDC museum and the CDC Foundation, Working Together. Defeating Ebola. will debut on Museum Day. The exhibit explores the unprecedented Ebola epidemic in West Africa, the powerful response by CDC and its partners and the generosity of the CDC Foundation’s donors. From disease surveillance officers tracking Ebola to lab workers testing for the disease, photographer David Snyder follows CDC and partners as they work together to defeat Ebola. These partnerships and the sustainable infrastructure they helped to create will continue to aid West Africa for years to come.
In addition to the Ebola-focused exhibit, the CDC museum debuted a new exhibit in July entitled Resettling in America: Georgia’s Refugee Communities, featuring powerful documentary photography from Atlanta-based photographer Bryan Melz. The imagery explores the refugee experience of all ages as they build new lives, identities and a sense of community, as well as the community-based, non-profit organizations that work to support them. The exhibit runs through December 31. Special curator-led tours will take place on September 30 and October 7. Reservations are required and interested parties should RSVP to museum@cdc.gov.
