Haiti Buildings

Following Haiti’s 2010 earthquake, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identified with Haiti’s Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP or Ministère de la Santé Publique et de la Population) the need to fund two buildings to assist public health officials with moving from temporary to more permanent facilities. The CDC Foundation worked with private partners to provide vital funding for these building projects, which are described below.

About the Buildings

Central Office for Haiti’s Ministry of Public Health and Population
(Ministère de la Santé Publique et de la Population)

Central Office for Haiti’s Ministry of Public Health and Population

Usage: This building replaces the MSPP facility destroyed in the Haiti earthquake and will serve as the platform from which public health activities will be managed in Haiti by the country’s Minister of Public Health and Population and her staff.

Donors: Kaiser Permanente donated $587,000 for the MSPP central office. Kaiser Permanente’s funding also provided furnishings, fixtures, electronics, computers, printers and internet connectivity.  In-kind contributions were provided by Proteus On-Demand to increase the size of the MSPP building and make enhancements within the facility.

Size: 1,600 square feet

Location: Within the new MSPP complex at #1 Angle Rue Jacques Roumain and Ave. Mais Gaté in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Division of Epidemiology, Laboratory and Research
(Direction d’Epidémiologie, de Laboratoire et de Recherches or DELR)

Division of Epidemiology, Laboratory and Research

Usage: This building is being used to house a portion of DELR staff and CDC staff stationed in Haiti who are now working side-by-side in the country. Haiti’s Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) is housed in the building as well. FETP is a CDC effort that works with ministries of health, along with other partners, to train public health workers to detect, investigate, and control threats to public health. FETP strengthens health systems throughout the world and protects Americans at home and abroad. The FETP program in Haiti was established after the earthquake.

Donors: This building is funded by a $2 million contribution from the GE Foundation and a $500,000 contribution from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. These partners’ funding also provided furnishings, fixtures, electronics, computers, printers and internet connectivity.

Size: 7,040 square feet

Location: The building is located in the National Public Health Laboratory (Laboratoire National de Santé Publique) complex at Delmas 33 and Rue Chardonnier No 2 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
