Walgreens Donation Helps Extend Emergency Response to COVID-19

The world continues to respond to the evolving COVID-19 outbreak. There are over 125,000 cases worldwide, and the virus has killed more than 4,000 people, the vast majority in mainland China.

We are pleased to share that our longtime partner Walgreens has stepped forward once again to provide a vital, initial response donation to our Emergency Response Fund, including a $100,000 gift to support the overall COVID-19 response. Additionally, Walgreens has donated 1,500 thermometers for distribution by the CDC Foundation to local health departments in Santa Clara and Alameda Counties in California. Walgreens previously supported our Zika virus emergency response efforts in 2016.

The CDC Foundation continues to raise support through our Emergency Response Fund to meet fast-emerging needs identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to help respond to the public health pandemic. These needs include additional support for state and local health departments; logistics, communications and data management; special needs for those in quarantine or delayed in travel; and much more.

“Walgreens is committed to working closely with CDC and CDC Foundation to help address rapidly emerging response needs for COVID-19,” said Walgreens President Richard Ashworth. “Our clinical and safety teams, pharmacy, supply chain and others are working around the clock to best meet the needs of our customers, team members and communities we serve. Collaboration with health officials, and across sectors, is critical at this time and we’re proud to support the ongoing efforts of the CDC Foundation.”

I want to thank Walgreens for its leadership and generous donation to help respond to this evolving outbreak. We have learned from past outbreaks that speed saves lives, and that rapid and flexible funding is essential.
